Boston roofs earn their keep between November and April, and this is where a lot of national comparisons go quiet.

I recommend natural slate when:
- The house was built for it and already carried stone, so the load is a solved problem.
- The house sits in a historic district that requires matching the original material.
- The owner is thinking in generations, where a 100-year roof beats two 50-year roofs.
- The architecture is worth it: a Tudor in Newton, a brick rowhouse in the South End, a Victorian in Cambridge where stone is part of the building, not a costume on it.
There is no shame in either answer. The mistake I watch for is a proposal that quietly swaps synthetic in under a “slate” line item without saying so, or one that prices stone on a house that cannot carry it. If an estimate says “slate,” ask exactly what is going up there.
