Up close, it is less simple.
Each piece has to hang right. Each course has to cover the nail holes below it. The chimney flashing has to be built before the slate hides it. The house has to carry the weight. Miss one of those things and a roof that looks expensive can still leak.
That is the part homeowners usually do not get from a quick quote.

Hard slate
