Box Gutters (Built-In Gutters): Repair, Reline, or Remove?

Gutters · 1:20 Box Gutters (Built-In Gutters): Repair, Reline, or Remove?

Box gutters are wood-framed troughs lined with sheet metal and built into the cornice of many pre-1930 Greater Boston homes in Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Cambridge and Newton. This 80-second video explains why they move more water than hanging gutters, how they fail out of sight, when a small repair, a new continuous liner or a full rebuild is the right call, why removing them changes the roofline, and how to inspect them twice a year.

Walk enough pre-1930 roofs in Greater Boston and you learn where the gutters hide. On many homes in Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Cambridge, and Newton, they're built into the cornice.

These are box gutters: a wood-framed trough, lined with sheet metal, hidden in the roofline. They're wider than a hanging gutter, often six to ten inches or more, so they move a lot of water. And they keep the cornice looking the way the architect drew it.

The catch: they fail out of sight. A pinhole, an open seam, or a clogged outlet holds water against the fascia, the rafter tails, and the soffit. Plenty of owners never notice until a bedroom ceiling blooms.

So: repair, reline, or remove? Small problems get small fixes: patching a short run or resoldering a weeping seam. If the old liner has failed in several spots but the framing still checks out, a new continuous liner goes in. If the wood is soft, the trim comes off, the box is rebuilt, and new metal goes in. Pull a box gutter and the roofline changes, and many historic districts would rather see the original kept.

Inspect twice a year, after snowmelt and after leaf drop. Press a screwdriver into the fascia where you can reach. Soft wood means water has been there. Call 617-913-1130, or visit artslateroofing.com.
