Arturo and his team were a true pleasure to work with. They were regularly on time, they worked hard, I trusted them, and the product was stellar as was their workspace: they were respectful of my home and always left it better than they found it. Arturo made frequent appearances to my home after the contracting phase, to communicate updates and review progress in person. He also helped me navigate some challenges that surfaced from other contractors on the project, coming up with quick cost-effective solutions that looked beautiful and kept the project rolling. My house was built in 1917 and has the original red slate and copper roof. In February of 2023 a bad leak developed and the water ran down through the walls in the attic and then through the second floor and down to the kitchen ceiling on the first floor. I contacted several roofers that advertised working on slate and after each gave me an estimate I chose Art Slate Roofing because of their reputation and estimate. All the roofers told me that it was dangerous to work on the roof in the winter because of the ice on the roof. As a result the work would not begin until the spring and we had good weather. I can appreciate their concerns because the peak of my roof is 42 feet high. Arturo told me that he would repair the major leak immediately and the rest of the work would be completed in the spring. He personally went up on the roof and did a temporary repair to the damaged area. It worked and the leak stopped. In the spring we agreed to a schedule that worked for both of us and his crew completed all the work on the roof. One example of the repairs is the area between two dormers on the front of the house that were covered with a kind of tar that was covering damaged copper that was underneath as well as on the channels on the side of the dormers. This was repaired with new, 20 ounce copper (The old copper was 16 ounces). His crew is very professional and thorough and during their work they made some additional minor repairs that they found. It is now summer and we have had several severe rain and wind events and I am happy to report that “all is dry”. I would recommend Art Slate Roofing to friends and family.
We have used Art Slate Roofing for nearly 20 years and cannot recommend Arturo and his crew more highly. Arturo is a skilled craftsman and true professional. He and his team are responsive, perform excellent slate, copper and EPDM work and keep a neat and clean job site.
Arturo has replaced gutters on my 1846 Greek revival house in Cambridge and matched them beautifully to the existing wooden gutters. He also reshingled a structure in our yard with high quality cedar shingles. His work is consistently excellent and the prep and cleanup is always immaculate. We will be using him to repair sections of our slate roof this year and highly recommend him and his crew. He is also a very nice person and has been very professional in all of our dealings.
We hired Art and his crew to remove the deteriorating asphalt roof and old gutters and install slate and copper roofs and copper gutters at our historic Mansard Victorian house in Davis Sq. It was a complex and expensive project, but Art put us at ease and explained all aspects of the job thoroughly. His crew did a fantastic job and their craftmanship is excellent. Art gave us excellent advice about materials to select; at one point I wanted larger sized slate, but thankfully he installed a few samples and I realized it was not a good look and we went with the smaller size. Our roof now looks amazing (now just need the exterior siding and porch renovated to go with it). Art had a lot of experience working with the Somerville historic commission which was helpful, as I had to defend my roof proposal in front of the commission and had no prior experience. There were definitely some surprises as anyone would expect with a complicated project on an old house, but dealing with Art was always pleasant. He is very polite and treats everyone with respect (unlike some other roofers who I met who wouldn't talk to me without my husband being present as if I couldn't manage the project on my own, good grief). Art is very responsive as well. When there is an issue or new information, he calls within 24 hours. He is very available on his cell phone. Since the installation Art and his crew come every year to clean the leaves from our gutters. Art was a little strange about us wanting to save the leftover slate as there was more left than anticipated, so expectations should be worked out on that in advance. Overall it was a wonderful experience to work with him. I only hope I can have such a great contractor for our siding project.
Arturo has been my go-to since 2016, for troubleshooting leaks and chimney, roof, trim, and gutter repair and replacement. He has worked with a wide range of materials on multiple Victorian-style properties. He is incredibly responsive (the first work he did for me was a late December emergency), honorable, and super friendly. Most importantly, he stands behind his work and takes care of his workers. ART Slate may not be the least expensive contractor you can find, but you can be confident in the quality and craftsmanship of the work and the integrity of Arturo and his team.
Arturo is one of the best and easiest-to-work-with contractors of all times! He replaced our custom wood gutters and provided beautiful copper downspouts. He also replaced the wood clapboards on our home. His attention to detail and workmanship is meticulous. He helped us navigate the very difficult permitting process with the historic review board. I would recommend Arturo for roofing, gutters, and any kind of general high end carpentry. Furthermore, his pricing is often better than others, even though his work is superior to theirs. He is the most honest of all the contractors I’ve worked with!! Highly recommend!
Arturo has been doing our slate roof maintenance, gutter cleaning and other complicated copper and chimney projects for us for years! Wouldn’t use anyone else! His team is highly skilled and does beautiful work!
Art and his team do phenomenal work and we recommend them without hesitation. We purchased a house several years ago that required repairs to a slate roof, rubber roof, and chimney. Art Slate Roofing installed a new roof for our 1890s Mansard in Cambridge: 5,000 sq feet, 49 roof facets, 340 ft of ridges, and 117 ft of valleys. Not an easy roof -- and Arturo's team did a phenomenal job. Arturo communicated with us every step of the way from preliminary inspection to getting permits during the Covid bottleneck to the last day when his crew left our garden and yard better than when they arrived. Arturo is in demand for a reason. As long as I have a roof over my head, I will be using Art Slate.
For roofing and gutter needs on our mid-1800's Italianate villa in Jamaica Plain, Arturo gets our business. His team is top notch. You may have to wait to get on his schedule, but that's the price for a reliable roofing specialist. Once you are on his radar, you are in good hands. Don't look for the cheapest option when it comes to your roofing needs. Arturo has helped us with prioritizing our needs and we are phasing the work we need completed over the course of a few years.
Arturo and his team at Art Slate roofing are the real deal. In a sea of people who pretend to know wha they are doing, Arturo always rises above the competition in my opinion. I have had Arturo work on every kind of roof, from slate, to shingle, to rubber, to standing seam metal roofs and the results are always outstanding. He communicates everything well, streamlines site logistics, and is always willing and able to problem solve custom conditions that require extra finesse excellently.
Arturo and his team are cheerful, responsive and fast! I had an 1872 slate roof with a chimney cut requiring a 'cricket'; rotting facia boards; inappropriate apex, etc. Arturo consulted on the color options, with samples, and did all the slate, copper and wood carpentry in what must have been record time—about 2 weeks as I recall. I can't recommend them highly enough.
Arturo is an excellent fair communicator with superb follow through and an ability to "make it happen" s he promised. His estimate are accurate, his team highly skilled and their work product is excellent and long lasting. Arturo is especially helpful in selecting materials and balancing price and value. He is bilingual, friendly, and a good partner for a large or small roofing project. His team did such a solid repairs on my small shed roof that when a tree stuck my home, I asked him to replace the shingles, underlayment, gutters, and to rebuild the sofits around the entire house. Years alter, I am still pleased with his work.
Arturo and his team do masterfully skilled work at reasonable rates. I’ve been working with him since 2008 across multiple jobs, locations, and roof types and cannot recommend more highly. He has done very detailed slate work and also rubber roofing. He’s the best roofer in greater Boston and incredibly responsive and just a generally honest, great guy.
Art Slate Roofing has done slate and copper work on at least six houses within a block of my house — four that directly abut me. From a roofer’s perspective, if there were a Slate Heaven, I think I’m living there. I needed routine maintenance on my 120-year old slate roof. Based on my observations and neighbors’ recommendations, I hired Art Slate to do the job, and while they were at it, install copper gutters, and copper dormer roofs. I definitely made the right choice. Arturo and his crew are master craftsmen. They are quiet and respectful, arrive on time, stay the entire day, don’t play music, and clean up before they leave every day. When you watch them work, you can tell that they know what they are doing. I’m sure you could find somebody to do the work for less money. If you shop around, Art Slate Roofing probably won’t be your lowest quote, but they won’t be the highest, either.
